The Buffalo River is one of Arkansas’ greatest treasures— free-flowing clean water, beautiful scenery, and a place for everyone to enjoy. But right now, it’s at risk. Senate Bill 290 could undo the protections that have kept the Buffalo safe from industrial pollution, opening the door for massive animal feeding operations (CAFOs) in the watershed.
What’s at stake?
For years, a moratorium has helped prevent large-scale factory hog farms from polluting the Buffalo. Now, SB 290 wants to end that protection, making it easier for industrial farms to set up near the river—potentially threatening water quality, wildlife, and local businesses that depend on outdoor tourism.
